ARTIST STATEMENT
Andrea Stajan-Ferkul is a Mississauga-based artist whose work conveys a sense of experimentation through her use of paint, fabric collage and abstract mark-making. Shifting between realistic representation and interpretive impressions, dresses have been a compositional focus throughout her oeuvre, with an emphasis on timelessness. In combining the powerful aesthetic of glamour and with closer observation, deliberate imperfection, she manages to create harmony when these two elements work together. Emphasis is on the emotional and intuitive elements, meant to communicate the feeling and mood of the piece.
Her series of abstract works embrace autonomous brushstrokes, taking visual cues from fragments within her dress paintings to place focus on the details which can be often overlooked. These are represented in spontaneous gestural applications in the most minimal of ways.
